Leaving Darwin, Tom and I knew we wanted a dog. We’d both had dogs most of our lives and the year we spent in our apartment was without a dog. It was hard but Mr Meowgi (our cat) was a great first addition!
Our first day in Townsville we looked at our new home, organised our appliances and the delivery, so naturally we thought the next best thing on our list was to go “look” at the Townsville RSPCA. Knowing that we were leaving for Sydney a week later, we had no real intention to adopt that day.
When we got to the RSPCA my heart was wrecked. There were so many animals there, in fact, they were three times over capacity being the Christmas period. We both wanted to take them all home.
I loved all the animals but none captured my heart. A volunteer suggested we look at the dogs in the waiting area (this is where they stay until they have had their check up, vaccinations and have been desexed). It wasn’t easy to see into these cages but a sweet face caught my attention and I asked if we could meet her.
When the volunteer bought out Nova (then Sunny) she ran over to me, I bent down and she curled up into my lap. She went from my lap to Tom’s, her personality was bright and cheerful, and she seemed to be such a happy dog.
She stole our hearts right then and there, so it was decided, we had to adopt her. We would take her to Sydney if necessary. Luckily though, we had the loveliest volunteer who could see the bond we all shared and helped us find a way. Nova still had to be desexed and have a check up so we had a bit of time up our sleeves!
The days leading up to our trip to Sydney, we explored Townsville but everyday we took Nova treats, took her for walks and played with her. It was the hardest thing not being able to take her home straight away but she was definitely worth the wait!
Since adopting Nova, we have explored together and watched her try and make friends with Meowgi. She’s taken over our couch and bed but mostly, she has filled our home and hearts with an overwhelming love and unimaginable amount of joy.
For most of our adventures together I only had my iphone so a lot of thee snaps are candid moments but I have included a few moments I have been able to capture with my camera.
The day we bought her home and her first walk
Our first time at the top of Castle Hill – we drove!
Pallarenda Beach before the storm hit.
Adventure walks were endless in our first month together.
The moment we knew she had settled in.
We met our neighbours a couple weeks after moving in and have all become fast friends, especially Nova and Xerxes who have play together all day everyday.
We have found that she loves to sleep. A lot. To the point where we have to drag her off the couch at times but she is a great snuggle buddy!
If you or someone you know is looking to get a puppy, dog, kitten or cat, I would highly recommend you try your local RSPCA first. Give a furry friend another chance at life. We have adopted both of ours and we haven’t regretted the decision for one moment!
